What exactly do you want?
2 3 0 0 0 ="Grand total equals "&sum(A1:a5) would give you a cell displaying "Grand total equals 5" If you want a total of words in a column, say "cat" =COUNTIF(A1:A5,"cat") would tell you how often the word "cat" appears.
