Default Sorting dates and inserting rows

I need to sort dates in a single column and group them so that different
dates are separated by an inserted row. Is there a way to do this without
performing it manually? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

"Group them" using what criteria?

One day groups? One week groups? One month groups?

One day groups, formatted as mm/dd/yy. The actual sort function, putting them
into chronological order, must be done manually (not very difficult) but
inserting rows between these different "day groups" could be automated.

Thanks for having me clarify.
