Default Conditional formatting across a row

I cannot figure out how to get a row to conditionally format, individual
cells to turn red when less than the cell above them, without doing each cell
individually. When I try to either select them all or drag or copy the
formatting to the row, I end up with each individual cell turning red if it
is less than the first cell in the row above, not the cell directly above.
Does anyone know how to quickly do this formatting?

If the range you are trying to format starts at A2, CF/ Cell Value Is/ less
than/ =$A1

Sorry. I misread your question. You *don't* want the absolute reference
for the column.

If the range you are trying to format starts at A2, CF/ Cell Value Is/ less
than/ =A1

But won't that format B2 if A2 is less than A1?
What I think the OP wants is for B2 to be formatted if B2 is less than B1?

[But thanks for posting that anyway, because it made me re-read the OP and
revise my original answer.]
