I need an explanation of having to use $ sign in a worksheet funtion.

Default Meaning of $ in function or formula

The dollar means that the letter or number after it is an absolute reference
and does not change if rows or columns are inserted or deleted.

Look in Excel help for absolute and relative addressing.
