if the data is exactly what mentioned here...enter the following in the cell
you need the total.

=IF(AND(A2<"",B2<""),SUM(MID(A1,9,1),MID(B1,9,1) ))

If both, A2 and B2 are not blank, this formula would add the 9th character
of A1 and 9th character of A2 which is 2 and 3.
