Default edit directly in cell - scroll with mouse

Why is it that after upgrading from Excel 2003 to Excel 2007 users must pick
one function over the other in terms of

1) navigating with the mouse wheel (i.e. compose a formula by typing "="
and then scroll with mouse wheel up/down to select applicalbe cell), or

2) double clicking to find the cell references of a formula (i.e. double
click and go to source cells).

Double click to trace, only works with "edit directly in cell" disabled;
with it enabled you get the highlighted boxes (i.e. the old F2 command).

Scrolling with the mouse wheel while composing a formula only works with
"edit direclty in cell" enabled; it does nothing with it disabled.

Quite the disservice and lost functionality if you ask me.

Any fixes/workarounds?
