Default protected excel2003 document. Name Cell not functioning.

I have created a lost/found document on excel (of which each month we receive
over 200 items).
To enable us to refer back to outstanding items I like to refer back by
using the NAME cell at top left of screen (highlighting each cell then giving
it a unique name like Followup123. However, now that i have protected my
document i am unable to utilise this function without unprotecting the
document each time i want to add a new name. This is way too time consuming.

Is there any way that i can continue to use the NAME cell or do i have to
find another way of highlighting outstanding items to be followed up?
Thank you in advance..... Gee i hope there is a solution cause i've tried
everything.
