Default dates in excel show up as text numbers in merge with word doc

I have five columns with dates in my spread sheet, all are formatted with the
custom function=mm/dd/yy. ( Have also tried the date function 00/00/00). When
I input the dates to Excel they work fine and look like they should look.
However when I try to mailmerge these dates into a word doc two of the
columns work OK. But the dates in the other three colunms come out as a
number. Example the date 09/14/07 becomes 39339 in the word doc. The date
06/17/07 becomes 39250 etc. I normally have the auto filter turned on and I
have tried with it off. It resides on my "P" personnal drive on my networked
computer. I'm using Excel 2003. Any thoughts????

Use the TEXT function

=TEXT(A2,"mm/dd/yy")

or change word switches

you might want to post any follow up in a Word newsgroup since Word is the
program that does the mailmerge
