Default Criteria

I'm trying to do a countif function where my criteria is a date range, like
between 8/1/2007 and 8/31/2007.

=COUNTIF(A2:A100,"="&DATE(2007,8,1))-COUNTIF(A2:A100,""&DATE(2007,8,31))

or


=SUMPRODUCT(--(A2:A100=DATE(2007,8,1)),--(A2:A100<=DATE(2007,8,31))
