Default Defining a range

Is there a way to define a range (let's say in column D), by a criteria, in
another column? For instance, if I have a formula in cell H1 that needs to
perform a function on data written in column D, but I only want to defing the
range in column D if the applicable criteria is in column B. I want all
other data in column D ignored. Can this be done? Byy the way, the range
would be contiguous.
