Default EXCEL CLOSES

I am using a spreadsheet with different formulas that I use for business
purposes which is updated each month. Each month I create a new tab as JAN07,
FEB07, and so forth; but when I reach to July, Excel closes itself without
saving my document. One thing that got my attention was when an unknown file
"AA960000" appeared after Excel closed, and another "DB525100" also appeared
after I tried to create the tab again.

Why is this happening and how can it be fixed?

Last year happened the same thing. I worked around it by creating another
file with the first six months and another with the other six months. I don't
want to repeat it again each year.

Your support will be greatly appreciated.

Default EXCEL CLOSES

Some background...

When excel saves the file, it saves it as a temporary file with a funny name (8
characters--no extension) in the same folder.

If the save is successful, xl will delete the original (or rename it to its
backup name (like "backup of book1.xlk)) and if that's successful, xl will
rename the funny named file to the original's name.

If you're seeing that funny named file, then something is going wrong.

Common things that get blamed for interruptions to this process are antivirus
software poking its head in or network errors--either permissions or physical
problems.

======
So just because you see those funny named files doesn't mean much--especially if
you say you aren't saving the file.

Does excel crash with other files--or just this file?

If all files crash, then you've got some detective work to do. Some links that
may help with your detective work:

Chip Pearson has some notes on how to diagnose startup errors:
http://www.cpearson.com/excel/StartupErrors.htm

And Jan Karel Pieterse has more notes:
http://www.jkp-ads.com/Articles/StartupProblems.asp

=====
If it's just this file...

If you open the file with excel in safe mode:

Close excel
windows start button|Run
excel /safe
file|open your document

Do you have crashing problems?

It may be time to rebuild this workbook.

Sometimes, using openoffice (opening and saving there) allow you to recover data
if the corruption is too bad for excel.

(http://www.openoffice.org, a 60-65 meg download or a CD)

If the file is really important, there are commercial recovery services. I've
never used it, but you might want to check into:

Take a look at www.excel-recovery.info . It has some tips for
recovering corrupted workbooks, and recommends a recovery program in
cases where that doesn't help.
