Default IF function

Can I use the IF function to change the colour of a font? I'm using an IF
statement to subtract one time from another giving a positive answer. Another
in the cell below to tell me if the subtraction of the two times is over or
under zero but I'd like to highlight, automatically if it's below zero by
changing the font colour to red. Trouble is the IF statement would referance
it's own cell.
Is it possible?

It's much simpler to use conditional formatting. Select cell click format -
conditional formatting and the rest is fairly intuative.
