Default Cell shows formula not the result

Hi
I have an unusual problem. When I change the formula (in this instance a
VLOOKUP when I change the range) the cell shows the formula not the result,
(as if I had put a ' before the = or typed CTRL+`)

- It only effects cells I change in one column in my spreadsheet
- If I drag the original formula down I dont get this problem
- I do not think I have changed any settings

I am using Excel 2003 SP2 on Windows XP Pro SP2

Thanks in advance for any help

Default Cell shows formula not the result

The cell was formatted to Text after the formula was applied.

For example put =1+2 in a cell - cell will show 3 - formula bar shows the
formula
Format the cell as Text - cell STILL shows 3 - formula bar STILL shows the
formula
Edit for formula, make the 2 into a 5 - now the cell shows only the formula
