Default can wildcard characters be used in IF functions

I am doing a mailmerge. In the IF function, can i use wildcards to substiture
numbers?

No, but if you'll give example of the imaginary IF() statement you might
think would work and/or the data you would be using to come up with the
numbers I'll bet someone here could come up with a formula or function that
would get the job done for you.
