Default cell comments

I have a range of unlocked cells in a protected work sheet and cannot apply
comments to the unlocked cells, the comments command in insert is unshaded.
Any ideas?

You can not normally enter or change comments in a protected worksheet, even
on unprotected cells. With Excel XP (and presumably 2003) you can select to
allow the user to edit objects, which will then allow comments to be
added/edited.
