I need to sum the hrs if the code does not equal 42. What is the best way
to accomplish task?

Try this in G2 and copy down as needed:

=SUMPRODUCT((MOD(COLUMN(A2:E2)+1,2)=0)*(A2:E2<42) *B2:F2)
