Default Count down with auto fill?

Howcome I can't count down with autofill? If I put a number into cell A0 and
then make cell A1 = A0 - 1, when I auto fill it doesn't count down in - 1
decrements.

Excel will autofill as you suggest either by putting a value in the
first cell then putting that cell -1 in the cell below and dragging
down. Or by putting a value in a cell, one lower in the cell below and
selcting both and dragging down.

However what is cell A0, a spreadsheet starts at cell A1,

If i type in a cell A2 "= A1 - 1", and auto fill, excel doesn't count down.

If you select A2 and get the black cross at the bottom right of cell A2
and drag it down the numbers should decrement.

What happens on you sheet. Do the values stay the same? If so is the
calculation mode set to manual (tools, options, calculation) if so make
it automatic?

If it is not that you need to tell us what is happening

Default Count down with auto fill?

With 100 in A1

In A2 enter = A1-1

In namebox type A2:A100 and hit ENTER

Now hit CTRL + D
