I think I am doing it wrong, what do you type for the source to get the list
from another spread sheet. I have typed in the source and I am just getting
the formula in the drop down menu and not a list

Name the range of the list of data first, then type in the source =name.

Highlight your list, type a name for it in the white box on the top left
of the screen that usually shows the cell name.
Then do Data Validation-List and type in source =name of range

Freddo

You use the generic term "spreadsheet".

Do you mean worksheet in a workbook or another workbook?

To use a list from another worksheet or workbook, you must give the list a name
and use the name in the source dialog box.

See Debra Dalgleish's site for how to do this.
