Default Look up?

I'm not sure what would work best, but I'm open to suggestions. I have a speadsheet where there are codes (1223M, 1234Z etc.). Each code means something but the definitions (i.e., socket wrench) are in another spreadsheet. When I get the original, it just has the codes...but I want them paired/matched up (for the definitions to show up beside the codes etc.). I wouldn't mind matching it by hand/sight, but there are hundreds and the report is new/different each day. Someone mentioend vlookup (which I can google, but don't know much about). Is there any other suggetions? Macros etc.?

I appreciate the help!
