Default Pivot Table variable sorce data

Hi
I am pulling my hair out trying to use an external workbook as the source
for my pivot table.
When I create a range name referencing the external workbook and use try to
change the pivot table source to the range, it tells me the range is not
valid.

The column headings arent in the first row on the source worksheet, and the
last row contains totals. does that matter? I have tried removing them but it
doesnt seem to make any difference.

I have scoured the web reading up on methods, but none seem to work for me.
I am using Excel 2007.

The source workbook will be constantly updated (by overwriting the file with
a new file of the same name), the amount of columns is constant but the rows
will change.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Many many thanks
Simon
