Default SQL Date as Filter

I imported SQL data into Excel 2007 using Data, Get External Data, From Other
Sources, From Microsoft Query.

I can import the information fine. I add a criteria for the EffDate and
type in [@EffDate]. When I close the query editor to return to Excel, I
click refresh all and a menu prompts me to enter the effective date. So far,
so good.

But I right-click the table, select table, and parameters. Then I change
the @EffDate option to "Get value from the following cell:" and set that
equal to a cell in my worksheet. But that gives me the error, "Conversion
failed when converting date and/or time from character string". My cell is
formated as ShortDate.

How can I input dates as SQL filters in my Excel spreadsheet?
