Default Excel 2007 Named Range - Naming convention

I just got a message that I can't use the following names in Excel 2007

POP1, POP2, etc.

and that they were being changed to _POP1, _POP2, etc.

What's the reason for that?

Thanks,
Barb Reinhardt

They look too much like cell addresses.

xl2003 had headers A:IV
xl2007 has A to lots of columns. And POP1 is row 1 in column POP.
