Not from an Excel add in but in StartHelp & SupportUnder Pick a Task there

how to do a "check for updates" over the internet
What I want to do is from my own excel addin query my own web site for
the current version, so as to compare it to the one the user is running. I don't see how Windows Update has any relation to this sort of task.
