new to using controls in a worksheet. how can I set a textbox to allow
input just from within the worksheet not from a UserForm..? it only
selects the textbox rather than allowing data input at this point.

Sounds like you are still in Design Mode. Whenever you add a control from
the Control Toolbox you are automatically put into Edit Mode for the
controls. Once you have finished formatting the control, click the toolbar
icon that looks like a triangle with a pencil. That will toggle Design Mode
On & Off. It must be off to use the control.
