I'm a novice excel user.
I'm looking for a solution using excel to update my stock portfolio sheet.
It is simple. I want to introduce a stock code in a cell/column and your
value may be displayed in another cell/column in same line and updated
automatic.
I'm an Office 2003 SP2 user and visiting some website I'd heard about an
"Office XP Web Service Toolkit 2.0".
In one of the papers of this kit there's a sample describing the routine.

1 - With my Office version do I need the toolkit?
2 - Where can I get the samples?

I use Excel to track my stock portfolio as well. I have Excel 2003 with
Service pack 2 and you shouldn't need any downloads to make this work. This
does access the internet, so you will need to be connected in order to
download the stock info. Here are the steps.

1. With Excel open, select "Data" from the main toolbar.
2. Select "Import External Data"
3. Select "Import Data"
4. Select "MSN MoneyCentral Investor Stock Quotes"
5. The text box asks where you want to place it. I usually place the stock
quotes on a new worksheet. Then I link from the other worksheet showing
original cost, purchase date, number of shares, etc.
6. Make sure to click the "Properties" button and do one of the following:
a) Select "Use the following value" and type your ticker symbols on
the line below separated by commas (c, msft, pfe, wm, ko, pep). Don't use
the parenthesis. Once you set this up, you won't have to set it up again;
you will only need to edit it if you add or subtract a stock. This is the
method I use.
b) The other option is to use the "Get Value from Following Cell"
which you can use to link to the ticker symbols on another worksheet. I
think you need to use commas on this one too.

7. After doing that you can hit the "Ok" button to get out of the
Parameters section and then hit "OK" again to start the download. The quotes
(along with some other information) should now be in your new sheet. They
are not real-time quotes.

8. To update the quotes, you just hit the red exclamation point on the
External Data Toolbar. That should have shown up automatically, but if it
didn't, go to View - Toolbars - External Data. The button to the left is the
"Query Parameters" button which allows you to change your stock tickers.

9. Like I mentioned above, I link from my main stock worksheet to the new
worksheet so that my gain/loss is automatically calculated each time I update
the stock prices.

I don't usually spend a lot of time at this forum, but I will try to check
back just in case you might have questions.
