Default Pivot Table: calculated item problem

I'm working with a pivot table in some vba code. The table categorize
each row of data into a company, year, and classification (row fields)
The data is also broken into two valuation dates (column field). I mad
a calculated item in the column field to get the difference between th
two dates.

The problem is that my data doesn't fill a nice even chart because eac
company doesn't necessarily have records from each year, and each yea
doesn't necessarily have records of each classification. Excel normall
handles this well and just doesn't show blank rows.

However, the calculated item takes 'blank' - 'blank' and gets '0'
Excel interprets the 0 as data and then shows the entire row of data
This results in me having many more rows in the pivot table than I wan
to see.

Is there a way around this problem? I was unable to assign an
non-numeric value to a caculated item. Any suggestions for handlin
this neatly
