Default Can I open a graphics file from within Excel

I would like to setup a spreadsheet record pupils art assessments. I would
like to be able to cliick on a 'button' to display examples of art work. Can
this be done?

Yes:

Just insert a hyperlink to each piece of artwork file. Then clicking on
that cell will display the picture.

pull-down:

Insert Hyperlink... and follow the instructions.
