Default Use of "application"

Hi all,

What significance does the word "application" have in the second line
of first code.

Code:
--------------------
Private Sub Worksheet_Change(ByVal Target As Range)
If Not Application.Intersect(Target, Range("A1")) Is Nothing Then
Select Case Target
--------------------

Code:
--------------------
Private Sub Worksheet_Change(ByVal Target As Range)
If Not Intersect(Target, Range("A1")) Is Nothing Then
Select Case Range("A1").Value
--------------------
