Default chart series data corrupted when chart has no data

I have a routine that allow the user to easily redefine the data ranges (by
x-axis dates) for a number of charts each with a number of series (in a
single workbook)

If the user specifies an x range without any y data, excel plots a blank
chart, but the next time it fails because the formula is corrupted. Checking
for the presence of data for each series in each chart beforehand is a chore
I'd rather avoid.

Anyone know if there is another solution?

thanks
