When you record a macro a Stop Recording Toolbar should come up. If it does
not then add the toolbar by selecting Tools Customize... On that toolbar is a
button for relative refence.

Start recording a macro, then goto ToolsCustomise and select the
Toolbars tab, then check the Stop Recording checkbox

And don't close it by hitting the "X" when recording a macro or you will
lose it again.

the stop recording toolbar has two buttons. The right button toggles
