Default A curious question

Can someone explain why EXCEL's built-in functions (like SUM, AVERAGE,
IRR, NPV) cannot be replicated -in terms of efficiency and speed -using
VBA? As a related issue, what language does EXCEL's code source use?

Just curious.

David.
