Default Before & After Refresh

I've been struggling with this all day long! Help would be very welcome
right now.

I am trying to use the Before- and AfterRefresh events.

I have followed VBA help's instructions but with limited success. It
involves creating a Class module to trap the events as far as I can
work out, then setting the reference to the query table and initalise
some other code, but what it was actually doing I didn't quite get.

I got my AfterRefresh code to be run once, but on reloading the file
and accepting 'Enable automatic refresh', it stopped working and never
did again! It's an external database, and the sheet is being
unprotected and protected before and after the query (among other
things), if that helps?

Thanks in advance.
