Default Update links bug in Excel 2003

When opening an Excel 2003 workbook that contains links to other data
sources, the "Update / Don't Update Links?" dialog appears. It is necessary
NOT to update the links when the workbook is used on a stand-alone PC.
Unfortunately, the links ARE updated after clicking the "Dont Update" button,
resulting in the #NAME? error replacing the displayed values on the
worksheet. Can anyone suggest a way to correct this bug ?

Default Update links bug in Excel 2003

Can anyone suggest a way to correct this bug ?

I can't reproduce this problem. If I click don't update the linked formulas
do not change. Also, if I select "Don't display alert and don't update
automatic links" under Startup Prompt I do not even see the prompt.

Default Update links bug in Excel 2003

Hi Jim, Many thanks for your reply. I can't reproduce this problem either
using a new workbook and I have tried everything possible. But with THIS
particular workbook, (that was sent to me by one of my clients in a major
bank in Hong Kong), on opening, it updates the links and destroys the old
values however way the dialog is validated. It would appear that this
workbook has become currupted in some way. I did find a way to prevent the
links from updating by first opening a blank workbook, then, in the
Calculation tab in the Tools Options dialog, selecting the Manual option
and clearing the Recalculate before save checkbox. Then I open the other
workbook and it did not corrupt the old values this time. Then I was able to
copy all the worksheets into a new workbook. Unfortunately, when saving the
new workbook, all the values were corrupted again. So the bug is still
there...

I am very grateful for your help. Perhaps, there is someone out there who
might have met up with this problem (it seems to be a rare case) who could
suggest another way out of this dilemma ?

Many thanks again :)

I wouldn't mind seeing the workbook if you can send it to me. Naturally you
should clear all the meaningful data first, just as long as what's left
still manifests the problem.
