Default copying data from one wb to another

i am wondering why this doesn't work

this copies one cell just fine:
With Workbooks(fname).Worksheets("data")
Range("c4").Value = .Range("c4")
End With

this copies one cell to the range in c:
With Workbooks(fname).Worksheets("data")
Range("c4:C9").Value = .Range("c4")
End With

this does nothing. i was trying to streamline the copying process, but this
doesn't work. how would i do this?
With Workbooks(fname).Worksheets("data")
Range("c4:C9").Value = .Range("c4:c9")
End With
