Default "Cannot Change Part of a Merged Cell" When updating link using mac

I am trying to update links in an excel sheet that has links to other
workbooks, using a macro. I am getting an error messge Error 1004:"Cannot
Change Part of a Merged Cell". But, if the link is updated manually using
EditLinks this works fine. I am using office xp.
