You might want to get the google search add-in. It's free and makes it
easier to find things concerning Excel. It also has some good sites listed:

But you can use Now() in code and get a static entry in the worksheet. It
only changes if it is entered into a worksheet cell as a formula.
Range("A1")=Now()
Range("A1")=Date
You should be able to format them anyway you want
Range()=Format(Now(), "mmm d, yyyy") (or anything you can dream up -
including hr/min)

Be sure to check out event macros - they should work for you.

Could not find much Browsing the NG on "log workbook".
It would me take ages to top all problems ahead. (Admitting it is the
best learning school but seen the time I spend already on it...I get
serious familial problems)

Just alreading thinking about the volatile functions you are mentioning
...! The report would not value much if I get updates on every second
the NOW() function has changed.
