Default Named Ranges in external Data Sources

I have a file which uses various data which is stored in a separate
spreadsheet in a different directory. The location of that external
spreadsheet may change. I have two questions: (1) what is the exact syntax
for naming a range in an external spreadsheet (2) are there any clver ways to
ensure that the reference changes automatically if the external file is moved
to a different location.
