Default Protect cells backward compatible

I am trying to protect a worksheet but unprotect a range for update purposes.
I protect the cells in XP (2002). When I send the sheet to someone with
office 97 then the unprotected cells do not work.

I can format/protection/unprotect them in 97 and then turn on sheet
protection and it works.

Any ideals?

Thanks in advance,

Stewart Rogers
