Default To make sure only the Validated list can be put in the drop down b

I have a validation criteria for a column which has a drop down menu. When i
enter the data other than the List , it gives me an error. But when i copy
and paste a cell from another excel sheet and i match the surce formatting it
will be entered in the cell which has a validation.
What am i to do ! Sholud i protect the cells

Protecting the cells will do the trick
