Hi,

I want to know if there any way by which I can find out in what Excel
version the xls file was created?

Thanks in advance.

Joe,

No, AFAIK. The basic file format has not changed since XL97.

Well, I don't know how it works or if it can help the OP, but if you create a file
in a newer version of Excel, and open it in Excel 97, you get a message commenting
that it's being opened in an earlier version.

Because of this silly message, I continue to work in 97 for one client.

Maybe fileformat would be sufficient????
Look at VBA's help (for fileformat) to see the list of returned values.
