Default Text strings recognized as numbers given different regional settin

We have a vb application which allows the user to export exhibits to excel.

The exhibits are displayed as text strings on a Flexgrid and subsequently
exported to excel.

How should numbers be formated before being displayed on the flexgrid such
that excel will recognize them as numbers regardless of the regional settings?
