Default formula for ranking participants of a contest

Hallo,
I am looking for a way to solve this problem.
Every year I ahve a contest with 8 groups of participants.
For every group I need to know who is first, who second etc.

Ofcourse I can rank by sorting but that is not a noce solution.
Does anyone know how I can realise that?
Thanks and greetings.
Theo
