Default Macro-eating monster

After upgrading to Office XP, my existing Office 2000
Excel workbook which contained a series of macros in VBA
(the macros were actually the sole purpose for the
workbook) raised the following error on opening it:

"Error accessing file. Network connection may have been
lost."

It promptly "repaired" my workbook by removing the VB
project and ActiveX controls associated with it. The file
now contains none of the VBA code or functionality I'd
created.

VBA is installed and running from my local computer (I
went thru the control panel config).
