Why doesn't this work?

a = activesheet.range("R1C1").value

R stands for Rows, C stands for Colums, and you can only use R1C1 style in
the formulas.
In VBA, you can use Cells instead of R1C1 style like this.
Cells(Row index, Column Index)

So the code would be as follows.

a = ActiveSheet.Cells(1, 1).Value
