Default Using the Vlookup formula

I have an amortization table as one sheet of my
spreadsheet. On another sheet is a financial model. I am
trying to make it so I can enter a given date (such as
today's date) in a cell and there would be a formula
(using vlookup, i think) that would take that date and
look through the column in my amort table which contains
date, find the closest or matching date, and then return
with the value that corresponded to that date. In other
words, if i entered 06/03 in my model, the formula would
look in my amort table and find the loan balance as of
06/03...Any suggestions?
