Locking columns and not protecting whole sheet

How can I lock say 5 columns of formulas without having to lock the
whole sheet?

Locking columns and not protecting whole sheet

By default all cells on a sheet are locked when the sheet is protected.

CTRL + a(twice in 2003) to select all cells.

FormatCellsProtection. Uncheck "locked" and OK

Now select the 5 columns and FormatCellsProtection. Check "locked" and OK

ToolsProtectionProtect Sheet

The 5 column locking does not work if you don't protect the sheet.

If I protect the whole sheet can I still have people input data without
having to log on with a password?

Yes.

The users can input data in the "unlocked" cells, which would be all the other
columns.

When you hit ToolsProtectionProtect Sheet you will be presented with a list of
options for users.
