Default Linked cells becoming inactive

I'm using Excel 2003 and have designed a workbook containing some 200
worksheets. Each worksheet has particular cells that are linked to a summary
page in order to create a consolidated worksheet of important data figures.
Furhter a worksheet has also been created to compare two numbers calculated
in separate worksheets and produce a conditional response based on the
equality of these two numbers.

The problem I have is that some of the linked cells are becoming what I
would call inactive. For instance, information will be entered into a cell
on worksheet A, but the data will not update into worksheet B where the link
has been established. I have double checked the linked cells to ensure the
worksheet and cell references are correct and they are. However, if I were
to reenter the formula to link the cells exactly as it was originally the
link will be reestablished. The most puzzling part of this problem is that
it is occurring randomly ie. it is not always the same cells that are not
updating based on new data entries. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Note: All worksheets in the workbook are protected.

Check if calculation is set to automatic.

<Tools <Options <Calculation tab.

Yes, calculation is set to automatic. Also, if I try to force the sheet to
calculate the 'inactive' cells still will not update.

I've never seen this in real life, either.

But there have been some posts that describe this as a way to "fix" the
problem. (I don't know if the "fix" will stop working, though.)

Select all the sheets
Select a single cell (or select all the cells)
edit|replace
what: = (equal sign)
with: =
replace all

ungroup the sheets

Since you're changing the formulas (= becomes =, but excel doesn't know how much
or little you changed), it'll re-evaluate each of the formulas.

Maybe that will wake up excel's recalculation engine.

ps. make sure all your formula cells are visible, too.
