Default pivottable: Why do I get Count instead of Sum when numeric data

If my source date is numeric I expect to get a Sum for a column. Often I get
Count instead of. How can I change med source data?

I believe that typically happens if the amounts column contains blanks.
If you double-click the field in Layout, you can change the function to SUM.
