Default What causes column headings in Excel to change from A, B, to 1,2?

Using Excel 2003 sometimes the column headings change from A, B, C, etc to 1,
2, 3, etc. The rows maintain their headings of 1, 2, 3 but only the column
headings change. This makes the creation of formulas difficult. Thanks.

ToolsOptionsGeneral.

Uncheck "R1C1 reference style".

This a user-generated change from unchecked mode.
