Default Making a formula using letters

I would like to use letters and then make a formula to either add or subtract
those letters depending on what letter it is. Is this possible

I think some examples of what letters you want to enter, what values
correspond to them, and the result you hope to see would be helpful. Maybe
even a mock-up of the kind of formula you think might work.
